SD13 - The Soundcloud Challenge.

I've been wanting to do this little idea for a while now and i've finally got the chance to. Soundcloud (as you probably are already aware) is an amazing intuitive website where artists/producers can set up an account and showcase their talents to the world. Along with You Tube Soundcloud has the world wide web locked down. Nothing else can compete with its simplicity, clean aesthetic interface, timed comments on any section of a particular track your feelin', and download ease. In a world where we receive tweets on breaking news events before radio or TV, I have no doubt that tomorrows future classics will break and explode on Soundcloud & Twitter before Radio stations and TV alike even pick up on it.

With this Episode I wanted to show how I can make a very good, professional mix of superb music that would have cost me about £100 in record shops 10 years ago. The power of "the cloud" is phenomenal. Here are 12 bangers that any dj is able to download for free on Soundcloud and able to use in their dj sets in a club at peak hour. I have included two of my own, so apologies for any nepotism in advance, but what i did for most is follow #soundcloud tag on twitter(my twitter is @paulhelsby)and selected tracks coming into the news feed. Welcome to SD11 - Summer Bangers.

It can be a tad annoying that artists/producers save their best work to release in the peak of summer for the holiday season.. But hey, you can't complain too much when August comes around and the air is filled with sublime, sophisticated Soulful House. One track is going to be massive, so big in fact, i had to play it twice in this mix... Lovebirds have teamed up with Stee Downes to produce an absolute killer. The first time you hear it, it feels like you've known it forever! Soul Drenched 11 is also blessed with Nick Moss (aka Groove Assassin). Sean McCabe - who is absolutely killing it with so many great remixes at the moment. Fresh music from Deep City Soul with Guy Robin on remix duties.

Speaking of Guy, his new track "Only You" is in the mix and is sure to cause fire on the dance-floor. The mix then gets partyful with my man John Morales' new remix of DJ Meme's classic cover - Love Is You(check them strings!). We've also got the amazing mix of Black Water by my good friend Rob Hayes which guarantees to work any dance-floor. There is little remix from myself in there, then we crescendo in what i believe will be defined as the tune of summer 2011...

Welcome to another addition of Soul Drenched, SD10 is an even number, which means we slow things down, sit back with a glass or two of wine.

Previous Soul/Funk/Groove episodes have featured quite a lot of old, rarer tracks. In this episode i wanted to redress that with some more recent cuts... This episode starts off with a rare track though, by Rachel Claudio. this is a very talented artist indeed, who is an accomplished pianist along with such a wonderful soulful voice. Suffice to say, she too good for the mainstream, but when you hear this opening track it has the feel good factor that makes you think you've known it all your life.

After that we go into Sade's new track which is such an eloquent cover of a Led Zeppelin classic. From there i spoil you with Omar, classic Brownstone, then Jamie Woon's latest track, with a cheeky acapella thrown in to Introduce John Morales' remix of Marvin Gaye, which will make the hairs on the back of you neck stand up!

I then speed thing up a little for the second half of the mix with a less known track that you will think "where have i heard this before"

SD Vol 5, For those of you who follow in i-tunes - apologies for the delay! It's 2 months late due to other commitments i had taken on. So here it is. This was my take on Summer 2010 (or the lack of it) The weather didnt live up to its promise, but hopefully the music will. I've been quite conservative with this mix... I've picked the tracks that went deep into that summertime vibe along with treating you to the tracks that were absolute faves on the dancefloor... from Andy Ward's Bah Samba Remix, to Scot Wozniak's remix of Estelle's - Fall In Love. To Grant Nelsons Smash with - Black Water and to the esoteric highs of Fantastic Plastic's remix of James Brown's - Sex Machine... But lets start off nice cool on a smooth mid tempo and build from it... This Mix takes you deep, brings you up, takes you deep again then brings you back to peak time.

Looking at my recent download stats, SD Vol 2 is by far the most popular. Its great to see the download stats displaying hits from countries like USA, Canada, Russia, Brazil and Australia. When i upload a House music mix it is generally contained to the continents of Europe and North america.

So in order to keep in with that worldwide appreciation for Funk, Soul and Groove, no matter what genre or tempo it comes in... Welcome to SD Vol 4. Its really is as varied as a mix can get with the tempo starting at a very slow ballad-like 100bpm and slowly rising to 120bpm to eventually (and hopefully) get you dancing.

I really don't know of anyone else doing similar mixes to this and that was mainly the inspiration behind trying something unique in design but broad-sweeping in appeal. I Hope it has something for every age group with the last couple of tracks being new, so new, one isn't even released yet!!

If you have 1 hour to spare I feel this mix is best played in a dimly lit room with a glass or two of wine or beer and no disturbances whatsoever... just let the music take you on a journey from start to finish..

Welcome to Volume 3.

This is the 'goosebump' episode. 1 hours worth of some of my all time tried & trusted favourites. Every track on this episode has made a big impact when i've played them. They are tracks where people who wasnt dancing started to, and at some point every track on this playlist people have asked "whats this called"

And Also for me this is the essence of true house music, there is no sign of Tiesto or Lady Ga Ga. it leans on the side of salsa and latin incursions, whilst keeping it deep and soulful. I am going to mention the release year of the tracks to show how good music doesn't really age even though technology and production advances year after year.

If you love House music then this i the podcast for you. If you don't really know what house music is but are of the opinion its "lots of bleeps and squeaks made by Germans" (to quote Trevor Nelson). Then think again and give this a little listen, you may be surprised!!

What do you get if you throw Jocelyn Brown, Chris Rea, Cheryl Lynn, The Clash and Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes all into one room? The Answer is Soul Drenched Vol 2 !!

This is the second podcast of the series and focuses on the summertime. certainly something for the warm weather, with laid-back classics and some groovy oddities of funk, soul and groove selected by myself. Its a very different mix and certainly something you wont hear often.

Its intention is nice background music that slowly builds and increases in tempo, resulting in you wanting to dance. Ideal for sunbathing by the pool, or socialising at a BBQ. this mix Works fantastically early in the night or early doors in a bar or club when the first few drinks are consumes and it starts to fill up.

Welcome to my first new mix for 2010 !! For those not too familiar with my style the best way to explain it is the soulful side or House, or the housey side of Soul !!

This First SoulDrenched mix is intended to reflect the people of a club or bar. You cannot please everyone all of the time, and whilst your behind the decks if you watch the room you'll notice different people at different stages in their lives. Some are happy, some aren't, some are extrovert, some are introvert, some are in the throws of romance, some have lost it, some just want to get drunk and some just want to dance!
